Mattresses 101 - Our Guide to Mattress Basics

Updated: Jul 3

Selecting a new mattress can be overwhelming. There are so many types, technologies and brands available that it's easy to get confused about what is right for you. A mattress is an essential product that can greatly impact your overall health and well-being. In this blog, we will cover the basics of mattresses, including mattress types, sizes, materials, and care tips.

Common Types of Mattresses:

  1. Innerspring: These are the most traditional type of mattress and consist of coils covered with foam and fabric. They are durable, supportive, and available at a range of price points. The term “innerspring” refers to both Continuous Coil and Pocket Coil mattresses.

    1. Continuous Coil mattresses are typically cost less than pocket coil mattresses, but won't last nearly as long. The coils are all connected together in a network, so the springs move as one unit.

    2. In Pocket Coil mattresses, each coil is individually wrapped and can move independently of the other coils. They provide superior support and comfort over continuous coil beds because they conform to body contours. They also reduce motion transfer, make less noise, and can be used with adjustable bases.

  2. Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses usually consist of two of more layers of different types of foam. They conform to the shape of your body, providing excellent pressure relief and support. They provide superior motion isolation, making them a strong choice for couples, and come in a wide range of price points.

  3. Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses combine innerspring pocket coils with thick layers of foam or latex for the best of both worlds. They offer the feel of an all foam mattress with the additional support of pocket coils .

  4. Latex: Latex mattresses can be made entirely from natural latex foam rubber, however all latex mattresses are very expensive. There are also mattresses available that have layers of latex foam in them, to provide that light and airy feeling of a latex bed at a fraction of the cost.

Mattress Sizes:

  1. Single: 38" x 75"

  2. Single Long: 38" x 80"

  3. Double: 54" x 75"

  4. Queen: 60" x 80"

  5. King: 76" x 80"

  6. California King: 72" x 84"

Mattress Materials:

  1. Coils: Innerspring mattresses use coils for support, which are made of steel and can vary in thickness and shape.

  2. Memory Foam: Memory foam is used for support and comfort. It can be made of different types of materials, from completely synthetic to all natural. DreamLife Mattresses use soy based and latex foams, so there is no toxic off-gassing. The density and firmness of the foam can vary.

  3. Fabric: The sleep surface of a mattress can be made of various materials including cotton, wool, and silk. There are also cooling fabrics available to provide a cooler sleep experience.

Mattress Care Tips:

  1. Rotate your mattress regularly to prevent uneven wear.

  2. Use a mattress protector to keep it clean and free from spills and stains.

  3. Vacuum your mattress regularly to remove dust and debris.

  4. Do not jump on your mattress, as this can damage the springs and foam.

  5. Follow the warranty instructions to ensure long life.

  6. Replace your mattress approximately every 10 years, or when it no longer provides the support and comfort you need.

Choosing the right mattress is important for your general health and well-being. It's key to consider your sleeping position, budget, and personal preferences before selecting your new mattress. It's strongly encouraged to follow the warranty instructions and care tips to ensure your investment lasts for years to come. Knowing how to choose the right size bed is crucial for a good night's sleep and a well-proportioned bedroom. Factors to consider include your height, whether you sleep alone or with a partner, how much you move around, and the size of your room. Online guides and dimension charts can help you weigh these factors against the actual measurements of different bed sizes like Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King. This information empowers you to select a bed that perfectly matches your comfort and spatial needs.

If you're trying to Discover detailed bed size charts to figure out the best option for your bedroom and comfort, online resources can be invaluable. These charts typically list all the standard US (and sometimes international) bed sizes with their precise dimensions in inches and centimeters. This makes it much easier to compare, for example, a Queen with a Full, or a King with a California King, to see which one truly meets your space and sleeping requirements. It takes the guesswork out of a significant purchase.
