Is your mattress ready for the dump?

A good night's sleep is essential for our overall health and daily well-being. A huge contributing factor in the quality of a person's sleep is their mattress. Maybe your mattress was a hand-me-down; maybe it was too firm or too soft for you from the beginning; or maybe, it's just wearing out. Over time, a mattress will undergo wear and tear, impacting its ability to provide comfort and support. Knowing when it's time to replace your mattress is important to ensure you will enjoy comfortable nights and wake up feeling rested and refreshed. In this blog, we'll explore the signs that indicate it's time to replace your mattress and provide helpful tips for selecting a new one.

1. Age of Your Mattress:

Mattresses, like any other product, have a limited lifespan. Most mattresses are designed to last between 7 to 10 years, although this can vary depending on the brand and quality (most DreamLife mattresses have a warranty period of 10 years). If your mattress is nearing or surpassing 7 to 10 years of age, you should start considering a replacement. As mattresses age, they lose their ability to provide adequate support and comfort, which can lead to restless nights and increased body aches and pains.

2. Uncomfortable or Restless Sleep:

One of the primary reasons for replacing a mattress is discomfort during sleep. If you find yourself having trouble falling asleep, tossing and turning, or waking up with body pain or numbness, it's probable that your mattress is no longer providing support your body needs. No matter what kind of mattress you have, over time, the materials in a mattress will lose their resilience, leading to sagging or uneven surfaces. This can adversely affect your sleep posture and spinal alignment, causing discomfort, disrupted sleep patterns and chronic body pain.

3. Visible Signs of Wear and Tear:

Inspect your mattress for visible signs of wear and tear. Look for major body impressions and sagging as these indicate a failure of the support system. Stains and unpleasant odours can also be signs that your mattress needs replacing. Additionally, if you can feel protruding springs or if the mattress feels lumpy and uneven, it's time to start considering a new one. These conditions will not only affect your comfort but may also impact your sleep hygiene and overall health.

4. Allergies and Respiratory Issues:

Over its lifespan, a mattress will accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells, and other allergens, which can trigger respiratory issues, allergies, or asthma attacks. If you've been experiencing an increase in allergy symptoms or breathing difficulties during the night, it might be time to replace your mattress. When you do replace your mattress, opting for a hypoallergenic or dust mite-resistant mattress protector for your purchase will help alleviate the accumulation of allergens over the life of your mattress and provide you with a healthier sleep environment.

5. Partner Disturbance:

If you share your bed with a partner, pay attention to the impact your mattress has on your sleep quality as a couple. If you or your partner experience poor sleep due to motion transfer (where one person's movement transfers to the other side of the bed), it's an indication that your mattress lacks sufficient motion isolation. In that case, investing in a new mattress that offers better motion transfer reduction can significantly improve your sleep experience. Hybrid and pocket coil mattresses are great at reducing motion transfer.

Choosing a New Mattress:

When it is time to replace your mattress, consider the following factors while selecting a new one:

  1. Firmness and Support: Choose a mattress that offers the right balance of firmness and support based on your sleep position and personal preferences.

  2. Construction: Consider different mattress constructions, such as memory foam, pocket coil, hybrid, or latex, and select the one that aligns with your comfort needs and preferences.

  3. Budget: Set a budget that allows you to invest in a quality mattress without overspending. Remember, a mattress is an investment in your sleep and overall well-being.

  4. Warranty: Look for a mattresses that offers a trustworthy and lengthy warranty.
